He is one of the most important personalities in the recent history of Pontus. He was born in 1881 in Gratini Rhodope, Thrace and graduated in 1903 from the Theological School of Chalki. In the same year he was ordained a deacon and was placed in the service of Metropolitan of Trabzon. In 1913 he was elected Metropolitan of Trabzon. When in 1916 the Russian occupation of Trabzon was approaching, the Turkish governor Cemal Azmi handed over the administration of the city to him, saying the historical phrase: “We took this city from you, we hand it over to you.” His almost two-year rule was a real break of democracy and harmonious coexistence of Christians and Muslims. After the ignominious end of the Asia Minor campaign in 1922, he took refuge permanently in Athens.
In 1938 he was elected Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece. However, he lost his archbishopic throne in June 1941, because he refused to officiate at a service in the Diocese, in the presence of the German occupation authorities and because he refused to swear in the appointed government of Tsolakoglou. These actions were accompanied by those historical words: “The leader of the church does not hand over the capital of his homeland to any foreigner. The leader of the church has one duty: To take care of her release”. With his initiative the Pontian Studies Committee was founded in 1927, which played an important role in the writing and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Pontian Hellenism. He was the first chairman of the Committee until the end of his life (1949).
He died penniless on September 28, 1949 and his funeral was held at public expense and with the honors of a prime minister. The unveiling of his bust behind the Sanctuary of the Temple of the Transfiguration of the Savior took place in 1968 by the Archbishop of Athens Hieronymus A΄. In March 2023 the bust was moved, in a prominent position, to the forecourt of the Temple.

Ανήκει στις σημαντικότερες προσωπικότητες της νεότερης ιστορίας του Πόντου. Γεννήθηκε το 1881 στη Γρατινή Ροδόπης της Θράκης και αποφοίτησε το 1903 από τη Θεολογική Σχολή της Χάλκης. Το ίδιο έτος χειροτονήθηκε διάκονος και τέθηκε στην υπηρεσία του Μητροπολίτη της Τραπεζούντας. Το 1913 εκλέχτηκε Μητροπολίτης Τραπεζούντας. Όταν το 1916 πλησίαζε η κατάληψη της Τραπεζούντας από τους Ρώσους, ο τούρκος βαλής Τζεμάλ Αζμή του παρέδωσε τη διοίκηση της πόλης λέγοντας την ιστορική φράση: «Από σας την πήραμε αυτή την πόλη σ’ εσάς την παραδίνουμε». Η σχεδόν δίχρονη διοίκησή του υπήρξε ένα αληθινό διάλειμμα δημοκρατίας και αρμονικής συμβίωσης χριστιανών και μουσουλμάνων. Μετά το άδοξο τέλος της Μικρασιατικής εκστρατείας το 1922 κατέφυγε οριστικά στην Αθήνα.
Το 1938 εκλέχτηκε Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος. Έχασε όμως τον αρχιεπισκοπικό του θρόνο τον Ιούνιο του 1941, γιατί αρνήθηκε να χοροστατήσει σε λειτουργία στη Μητρόπολη, παρουσία των γερμανικών αρχών Κατοχής και γιατί αρνήθηκε να ορκίσει τη διορισμένη κυβέρνηση Τσολάκογλου. Τις ενέργειες αυτές συνόδευαν τα ιστορικά εκείνα λόγια: «Ο αρχηγός της εκκλησίας δεν παραδίνει την πρωτεύουσα της πατρίδος του σε κανένα ξένο. Ο αρχηγός της εκκλησίας ένα καθήκον έχει: Να φροντίσει για την απελευθέρωσή της». Με πρωτοβουλία του ιδρύθηκε το 1927 η Επιτροπή Ποντιακών Μελετών, η οποία έπαιξε σημαντικότατο ρόλο στη συγγραφή και διάσωση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του ποντιακού ελληνισμού. Υπήρξε πρώτος πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής μέχρι το τέλος του βίου του (1949).
Πέθανε πάμπτωχος στις 28 Σεπτεμβρίου 1949 και η κηδεία του έγινε με δημόσια δαπάνη και τιμές πρωθυπουργού. Τα αποκαλυπτήρια της προτομής του, πίσω από το Ιερό του Ναού Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος, έγιναν το 1968 από τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αθηνών Ιερώνυμο Α΄. Τον Μάρτιο του 2023 η προτομή μεταφέρθηκε, σε περίοπτη θέση, στο προαύλιο του Ναού.
